Just Got Engaged in Scottsdale? Here's Exactly What to Do Next
Congratulations, you're engaged! Right now you're probably somewhere between admiring your ring and wondering where on earth to start. Take a breath. Whether you got engaged on an Old Town rooftop, out on a McDowell Sonoran trail, or at sunset over Camelback Mountain, one thing's true: Scottsdale is one of the best backdrops in the country for a wedding story, and your engagement is just the first chapter of it.
First of all, you should know that you're not alone. I talk to newly engaged couples all the time who feel excited but a little overwhelmed by social and personal opinions from others. So here's a simple, no-fluff guide to your first few weeks of engagement. (Bonus: a few things I wish every couple knew before they started planning.)

1. Set Your Date Range Before You Set a Date
Most couples think they need an exact date immediately. You don't. Start with a season instead.
Fall (October–November): Golden hour light, comfortable evening temps, peak demand for venues and vendors.
Winter (December–February): Scottsdale's sweet spot. Cool days, warm light, snowbird season means busy venues.
Spring (March–April): Wildflowers in bloom, gorgeous desert color, another high-demand window.
Summer (May–September): Lower prices, more availability, and honestly.. beautiful monsoon skies if you're willing to shoot around the heat.
Once you know your season, you can start locking in a venue, and your actual date will follow naturally.
2. Book Your Venue and Photographer Early, like Really Early
Scottsdale is a destination wedding market. Popular venues like The Boulders, El Chorro, Four Seasons Troon North, and Mountain Shadows book out 12–18 months in advance, especially for fall and spring weekends. Photographers with strong availability in those same windows book up just as fast, sometimes faster, since we only take one wedding per day.
If you only do one thing this month, do this: build a shortlist of 3–5 venues and 3–5 photographers whose style you love, and start reaching out.
3. Plan an Engagement Session. It's More Useful Than You Think
Engagement sessions aren't just pretty photos for your save-the-dates (though they're great for that too). They're a low-pressure trial run with your photographer before the wedding day. You get comfortable in front of the camera, your photographer learns how you move and interact together, and you walk away with images you'll actually want to frame.
Some of my favorite Scottsdale spots for engagement sessions:
Papago Park: red rock formations and that iconic "Hole in the Rock" view
Old Town Scottsdale: golden light, brick alleyways, and a laid-back date-night feel
Desert Botanical Garden: saguaros, wildflowers, and dramatic desert texture
Scottsdale Waterfront / Soleri Bridge: modern architecture with mountain views at sunset
4. Get Clear on Your Photography Style Before You Book
Every couple thinks they want "candid, timeless, and romantic" and that's a great start, but it doesn't narrow much down. Instead, look at full wedding galleries (not just highlight reels) from photographers you're considering and ask yourself:
Do I want light and airy, or warm and moody?
Do I want mostly candid documentary shots, or a mix with more posed portraits?
Does this photographer capture emotion, or just pretty scenery?
Your photographer's existing galleries are the best preview of your own wedding day — trust what you see there more than any Pinterest board.
5. Protect Your Golden Hour
In the desert, light is everything. A 2pm ceremony under the Scottsdale sun looks completely different from a 5:30pm ceremony bathed in that famous Sonoran gold light. When you're building your timeline, work backward from sunset, not forward from your ceremony start time. Your photographer can help you map this out; it's one of the easiest ways to elevate every photo from your day without spending an extra dollar.
What to Do This Week
If you're feeling the "where do I even start" panic, here's your simple checklist:
Pick a season (not a date)
Set a rough guest count and budget
Shortlist 3–5 venues
Start reaching out to photographers whose galleries you love
